WRESTLING.IE - Home of the Fighting - Irish Wrestling | featuring the best of - American Wrestling | European Wrestling

Almost 2000 BC - a long time before Irish Warriors such as Cú Chulainn or Fionn mac Cumhaill...

Mythical Celts fought under Collar and Elbow rules at the ancient Tailteann Games held every summer near the historic Hill of Tara.

These - the earliest recorded athletic events, helped inspire the creation of the barbaric Greek Olympiads,

the Gladiatorial Games inside the Roman Colosseum and even the modern day Olympics! All began on the ancient island of Ireland!

-

Although other forms of wrestling developed throughout the world. The Collar and Elbow style of wrestling remained popular in Ireland.

Wrestling was used as a way to settle disputes amongst land owners and in many cases, family members!

During the Great Famine, many Irish settlers in America brought this style of wrestling with them to the new land.

The Irish who famously fought on both sides of the American Civil War, passed time between battles, wrestling against each other.

-

The American's who shared camps, with the Irish became intrigued by this unique form of fighting.

As a result, after the war, many soldiers brought the sport home with them to every state in the union.

With technological advancements such as steam engines, auto mobiles, concert halls and newspapers, wrestling became big business!

Shortly afterwards, colleges and universities added wrestling scholarships to encourage the youth of America to get involved.

-

The earliest and most well known pioneer of American Wrestling was a young Irish American born in New York called William Muldoon.

Known as the Solid Man, Muldoon whose fame was the equivalent of Conor McGregor was the first ever World's Wrestling Champion.

Irish American's supported all of his contests, including the first and final match at the site of the original Madison Square Garden.

Heavily involved in Boxing, he helped train fellow Irish American and the first ever World's Boxing Champion - Boston's John L. Sullivan.

-

At his training facility in Belfast, New York, he created many world famous training techiques and devices such as the medicine ball.

After retiring undefeated from the ring, he continued as a policeman and served as the New York Athletic Commissioner until his death.

During this era, another Irish American got involved in both boxing & wrestling in New York City - Jess McMahon.

Born in Manhatten, Jess' parent's emigrated from Galway after their parent's had moved from Monaghan during the Great Famine.

-

Jess and his brother Edward showed interest in boxing & wrestling during the golden age of the Gotch-Hackenschmidt encounters.

After many decades of promotional wars, in both boxing & wrestling, Jess established himself as one of the top promoters in New York.

His son Vince, worked in the enterprise before taking over all wrestling responsibilites, eventually forming his own company in the fifties.

The company called Capital Wrestling based outside of New York in Washington DC, would one day become the WWE.

-

In the decades prior to television, stars of European descent ruled supreme and promoters were keen to cash-in on Irish Americans.

Irish athletes billed as wrestling champions, were recruited to fill stadiums, such as Cork's Danno O'Mahoney and Kerry's Sean Casey.

As Irish immigrants assimilated into American society, Vince McMahon decided to also cash-in on the huge Irish community in New York.

Renaming Terry Bollea - Terry Hogan in the seventies. Later the nickname Hulk was added and the name Terry was removed - Hulk Hogan.

-

In the eighties, Vince McMahon, Jr. - took over the family business. Alongside Hulk Hogan, they dominated the entire world of wrestling.

Across the sea, Jack McClelland, George Connell, David Finlay, Orig Williams & Simon Rochford - promoted many events over the years.

A lot of ITV stars developed on this circuit including the enormous - Giant Haystacks and the Belfast Bruiser - Fit Finlay, amongst others.

It was also on this circuit that current American Wrestling Superstar - Sheamus cut his teeth, defending his title in every county in Ireland!

-

The last decade has proven the most fruitful with so many talented promotions and performers emerging including - WRESTLING.IE !!!

In 2010, WRESTLING.IE hosted events in every leisure facility in Northern Ireland, beginning a new era in the annuals of Irish sport.

Over numerous events the following years, it became clear that certain performers rose to the challenge of being the best.

To reflect this competitive environment, WRESTLING.IE created it's first championship and invited all the top stars from every promotion...

For a special one night tournament to decide once and for all who is the Best of the Best in Ireland!

-

The tournament took place at the prestigious Waterfront Hall. Prince Devitt (aka Finn Bálor), flew in from Japan for the occassion.

In the opening round Devitt defeated his friend Shawn Maxer in an athletic showcase, with both men shaking hands after the bout.

The second Quarter Final match seen top stars and friends Paddy Morrow take on Danny Boy Butler, with Morrow narrowly advancing.

Belfast's Bonecrusher & Dunkan Disorderly prevailed over their oppenents The Bloodsucker and Sir. Paul Tracey in exciting contests.

-

The Semi Final's seen long time friend's Paddy Morrow and Prince Devitt clash in what was expected to be a high-flying encounter.

However Devitt, to the shock of the capacity crowd, turned on the Kamikaze Kid, laying him out with a steel chair to qualify to the Finals.

As Devitt left the arena, to a over whelming chorus of hisses and boos, Morrow had to be carried out and taken to a local medical facility.

In the Battle of Belfast, Dunkan Disorderly excelled over The Bonecrusher in a match for the ages. Both men left it all inside the ring.

-

After the match, Devitt unexpectedly stormed into the ring attacking Disorderly from behind, miraculously Dunkan got to his feet.

However Devitt, not prepared to go toe-to-toe with the Belfast Brawler, thought better of the situation as he tucked-tail and ran to the back.

Before the Finals, a special attraction match featuring Ireland's finest cruiserweight - Jordan Devlin took-on Britain's best - Marty Scrull.

What a match it was, with Jordan besting the British Superstar in a classic, allowing Devitt & Disorderly time to prepare for the Finals!

As expected the Finals spilled out of control as both Devitt and Disorderly brawled throughout the Waterfront Hall.

Devitt was no match for the Belfast Brawler, when he came to brawling around the world famous Belfast landmark.

However Devitt was prepared for this situation, as we now know he had secretly requested the help from Dunkan's opponents.

When Sir. Paul Tracey and The Bonecrusher entered the arena to help Devitt to his feet, after a ferocious combination of strikes...

-

Dunkan appeared on the balcony high above! Without warning, Disorderly dived upon the trio, eliminating the interference.

Taking control, the Belfast native put the boots to the International Star! With the crowd cheering him on, he attempted a high-risk move...

But unfortunately for Disorderly, he missed his patented Moonsault, as the experienced Devitt gained his second wind.

Devitt quickly ascended to the top rope for his now world famous double foot stomp - Coup de Grace finishing move.

-

Tasting victory, Devitt rolled Disorderly up for the win! A thunderous roar and sign of relief came from the crowd at the last second...

When Dunkan kicked out! This infuriated Devitt, who won many championships all over the world with this very move!

But he was in Belfast now, and Dunkan had the hometown support. Without sparing a thought, Devitt attempted another Coup de Grace.

This time Devitt lanuched himself ten foot into the air and double foot stomped right through Dunkan's chest, straight to his heart!

-

One! Two! and miraculously Disorderly slipped his foot underneath the rope, preventing Devitt of the WRESTLING.IE Championship.

This caused Devitt to go completely ballistic, as he provoked the referee, before he found a ladder at the side of the stage!

As Dunkan lay motionless on the canvas, Devitt placed the ladder over his limp body as he climbed to the top, ready to end his career.

When out of nowhere, Disorderly got to his feet and threw the ladder directly towards Devitt, landing squarely on-top of his head...

-

Disorderly, dragged the New Japan and future WWE - International Superstar by his blood soaked hair...

Into the middle of the ring... One! Two! Three! and the first ever WRESTLING.IE Champion is declared once and for all!

The two warriors would later engage in coming years over the WRESTLING.IE Championship, time and time again.

The feud ended when Dunkan regained the WRESTLING.IE Championship, right before Devitt left Ireland for the bright lights of America!

After Dunkan's successful feud with Devitt, the newly crowned WRESTLING.IE Champion travelled the country defending his title.

WRESTLING.IE expanded to ensure every major town received a first class wrestling event each calendar year.

WRESTLING.IE regularly performed in every leisure facility, hotel, theatre & festival - in every county throughout Ireland.

Dunkan faced new challengers to his throne and became enthralled in numerous fresh feuds!

-

Standing tall after each and every tour, nobody could capture the WRESTLING.IE Championship from Dunkan Disorderly.

After meeting every challenger throughout the Emerald Isle, WRESTLING.IE Management, decided to gamble on the Belfast Brawler.

Therefore organising a special event featuring the Best of the Best from around the British Isles to find out who's the best in Britain!

The Elite of England, Magnus, the Sinister Scotsman - Drew McIntyre and The Welsh Warrior - Mason Ryan were hand picked.

-

Surprisingly the Belfast Brawler proved everyone wrong as he defeated everyone in an exceptional four way match in the Waterfront.

At that moment in time, there was nothing that could stop the WRESTLING.IE Champion - Dunkan Disorderly, and his title was secure.

Until an unexpected change in management! - The new brass, decided that nobody cared who was the champion, it just didn't matter.

Over the coming years, stars would have their characters changed from show to show, confusing fans as to who was who.

-

The new board, mass produced so many shows, as many as 100 + per year, that Dunkan and co. simply weren't able to make every show.

Thus the management declared, once again, it just didn't matter, as they believed everyone was replaceable and the show must go on!

As a result, on many shows the belt was used as a prop leading to a decline in public interest, and eventually attendance figures.

Finally the fans spoke and demanded the WRESTLING.IE Championship - be restored to it's glory and rightful owner - Dunkan Disorderly!

-

Enough was enough, recently all WRESTLING.IE Superstars & Superfans stood up to the now former management and formed a union.

Unionising put the pressure on the board, after a series of strikes, forcing the top brass to put the company up-for-sale.

A consortium of buyers has allowed the public, for the first time ever to own and to control their very own wrestling promotion!

WRESTLING.IE has now become the people's promotion. The first order of business is to re-declare Disorderly as the people's champion!

-

Dunkan - the constant champion, wants to win fair n' square, is campaigning for a special event to determine the undisputed champ!

WRESTLING.IE - Home of the Fighting - Irish Wrestling | featuring the best of - American Wrestling | European Wrestling

Everybody at WRESTLING.IE was saddened with the loss of our biggest Superfan during the summer.

-

Our shows and our lives will never be the same again.

Mighty Max began his wrestling journey, like many of us as fans attending shows in his local Longford area.

Soon Max began attending our shows right across the entire Midlands, and shortly afterwards he never missed a show.

He made our shows much better and we believe he'll continue watching from his Ringside Seat in Heaven.

-

He showed the most amazing heart, coming to every show within an hour of his hometown, often in pain.

Max, who was diagnosed with cancer at just 18 months, somehow fought for every one of his eight legendary years.

Max loved when the crowd would chant his name 'Mighty Max!, Mighty Max!, Mighty Max!'.

He will never be forgotten - as Max is just as much apart of WRESTLING.IE as anybody in our locker-room!

-

He often held the championship and would present it to the winner of the matches.

One time he joined our announcer - who encourages the crowd to get behind the action, with chants over the microphone...

During the drama, Max cleverly suggested a chant, which we still use today and we always think of Max when using it...

'Don't Give Up!, Don't Give Up!, Don't Give Up!' Anyone who hears this chant at our shows, you now know where it came from!

-

Max made other suggestions which we will now amend to honour the 'Mighty One'. He famously told the promoter at one show...

'Why is there a different champion, every show? and the same guys have new names? It doesn't make any sense!'

Haha!!! - Sometimes a young person can ask a question that a wise man can't answer! But we promise to clean our act up...

As we know that Max will now be watching every show from above! Shows from not only the Midlands, but from Kerry to Derry.

-

Unfortunately Max was never given the opportunity to train and to become a wrestling superstar.

As the rasslin' rookie was called to the main event in the sky at only eight years of age.

There's no doubt in any of our minds, that Max was destined to one day become a wrestling champion!

As a result WRESTLING.IE gave our championship belt to Max so he can help Jacob wrestle against the Angels in Heaven.

-

When the short list of Irish wrestling champions is read, many years from now...

Honouree champion - Mighty Max, will be read out alongside all the greats... never to grow old, never to be forgotten!

We look forward on creating many more years of excitement for families all over Ireland and we know when the going get's tough...

and the crowd begins to rumble and roar... 'Don't Give Up!' there will be a special presence in all of our arenas!!!

-

Therefore we aren't sad to have lost our Superfan from the Midlands, because instead we have gained a National Superhero!!!
